This has been provided as a helpful reference for anyone interested in knowing exactly what some of the terms we go over within this site mean.


Algorithm - A set of rules in which a search engine uses to rank listings within its index. However, no search engine allows people to reveal how it works in order to protect itself from competitors.

Backlinks - All links which point to a single page.

Banned - This happens when a page is removed from a search engines index because it violated one of their rules, had missing links, or a variety of other reasons.

Clickthrough Rate - Takes the total percentage of how many times a link was clicked on divided by the total number of times the link was seen on that page.

Cloaking - This is the act of creating content which only the search engine can see in order to trick the search engine bot and get a higher rank in turn, usually done by creating text out of the boundaries of the page, or making the content the same color as the background.

Conversion Rate - Usually tracked on pay-per-click programs, this shows the number of conversions (sales) a sponsored link had out of the number of times people clicked on it and just passed through the site.

Cost Per Click - This is a system such as overture, or adwords, in which an advertiser agrees to pay a certain amount depending on how many times a visitor clicked on their link.

Crawler - Part of a Search Engine which goes throughout the web "crawling" each page gathering information to index within it's index.

Directories - These are search engines in which listings are gathered by humans instead of bots, yahoo is a good example of this.

Index - This is where all the copies of pages a search engine gathers after crawling the web is stored.

Keywords - These are popular terms on each page of a website in which the webmaster wants a high ranking on.

Landing Page - The page a visitor is taken too after clicking on a link in a search engine listing.

Link Popularity - Decides how popular a page is from how many links there are.

Listings - The information shown on a search engine after a search is placed.

Meta Search Engine - A search engine which gathers its listings from other search engines.

Meta Tags - Information inteded for a search engine crawler to help decide where that page should be indexed.

Organic Listings - Listings which get placed within the search engine naturally without having someone pay to get listed.

Outbound Links - Links leading to other sites on the web, this can be within the same site, or to other web sites.

Paid Inclusion - Advertisement programs in which your site's pages are guaranteed to be within the search engine on the sponsored listings section.

Paid Placement - Advertisement programs in which your site's pages are guaranteed to appear in the search engine's organic listings.

Rank - How well your site is ranked within particular search engines. This is usually decided by how popular your site is, and how many site's within the same search engine are linked back to your website.

ROI - "Return On Investment" displays the percentage of profit, or revenue gathered from a certain activity.

Search Engine - Any program used to allow users to search the web, these normally have both paid listings and organic listings.

Search Engine Optimization - The act of optimizing a site in order to be placed high within a search engines organic listings.

Spam - Many search engine have guidlines toward what they consider spam, however, this is usually inappropriately placing many keywords within one section of your site targeting the search engine bots instead of humans.

Submission - The act of submitting a URL for inclustion within a search engine's index.
